Knowledge & Skills

Working with young children requires more that just a love of children. It requires an understanding of child development and a sophisicated set of skills.  You need to understand how to work effectively with families, how to build trusting relationships, and how to create meaningful, engaging learning experiences.

For simplicity’s sake, we can divide this huge knowledge base up into two broad categories: Standards for Professionals  and Guidelines for Child Development and Learning.

Standards for Professionals

New York State Core Body of Knowledge

New York State Teaching Standards

Revised in 2011, the NYS Core Body of Knowledge outlines best practices for professionals working with young children, birth through age 8.

Guidelines for Child Development and Learning

In an effort to provide a clear, comprehensive, and consolidated resource, the New York State Prekindergarten Learning Standards have been revised to fully encompass the New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy, as well as for Mathematics at the Prekindergarten level. The revision process has resulted in one document, the New York State Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common Core.

Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework

New York State Early Learning Alignment Crosswalk

The Framework can be used to inform curriculum and assessment decisions, to connect child assessment data to school readiness goals, and to guide the decisions around the collection and reporting of child assessment data.

Regardless of which early care and learning setting a child attends in New York State, and which of the three resources (Early Learning Guidelines, Pre-K Foundation for the Common Core, or the Head Start Framework) is used in that setting, this crosswalk demonstrates agreement on what should be expected as children learn and develop.
